Fearing Trump, Mexicans call for stronger ties with China

“Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States.” The powerful quote, often attributed to the former dictator Porfirio Díaz, reflects on the perils of having a mighty, expansionist neighbor. His words still ring uncomfortably true, as the Donald Trump White House seeks to upend the global trade chessboard, rattling traditional US allies.

A recent Pew Research Center poll reveals that no country has less faith in Trump’s ability to handle world affairs than Mexico. Of 24 nations surveyed, Mexico was at the bottom, with just 8% of respondents expressing any trust in his leadership. That figure is dramatically lower than in neighboring Latin American countries like Brazil and Argentina, where roughly one-third of the population still voices support for Trump…
