Donald Trump returned to the White House yesterday, taking the oath of office in Washington, DC. His inauguration marks the beginning of a presidency expected to reverberate across the Americas, from Mexico to Argentina.
But it is in one smaller Central American nation where the transition has drawn particular attention, as its political landscape has been deeply shaped by US decisions in recent years.
👉 Why it matters. The fragile democracy in Guatemala has become a battleground between emerging reformers and an entrenched establishment resistant to change. While the Joe Biden administration threw its weight behind the former, Guatemala’s elites have embraced Trump’s return to power as a potential check on these transformations.
