Brazil’s lower house of Congress has plunged deeper into confrontation with the country’s democratic institutions. On Tuesday, lawmakers approved a constitutional amendment bill shielding themselves from criminal accountability. About 24 hours later, they voted to fast-track an amnesty proposal that would absolve former President Jair Bolsonaro and thousands of his supporters convicted of storming Brasília on January 8, 2023.
